Big Bomb On The Amaravati Capital Resolution

Big Bomb On The Amaravati Capital Resolution

Former TDP leader and senior lawyer G V Reddy has questioned the coalition government’s recent Assembly resolution declaring Amaravati as the sole capital of Andhra Pradesh.

It is known that the resolution, passed in the special Assembly session on the 28th, was sent to the central government with the coalition claiming it would ensure Amaravati remains the permanent capital regardless of future governments.

Coalition leaders asserted they would push for Parliament’s approval so that no future administration could shift the capital.

Reddy, however, clarified that the resolution only reflects political intent and has limited legal value.

According to him, sending the resolution to the Centre is merely a recommendation. Only Parliament has the authority to amend the law governing the state’s capital.

He said a future government could pass another resolution and send it to the Centre, which could then approve a legal amendment through Parliament.

Therefore, the claim that Amaravati cannot be changed under any circumstances is legally incorrect.

G V Reddy, once a strong TDP spokesperson, later served as chairman of AP FiberNet but resigned after raising corruption allegations against officials. Now practicing law independently, he said his statement was made purely from a legal perspective.

While he noted the resolution may boost investor confidence, portraying Amaravati as legally unchangeable is misleading.

G V Reddy’s remarks have effectively exploded like a political bomb on the alliance government’s narrative that Amaravati’s capital status is permanently secure.

By stressing that the resolution offers no legal guarantee, he has raised fresh doubts over the claim that the city’s status cannot be altered in the future.
