Andhra Pradesh imposes new COVID restrictions

Amid spurt in COVID-19 cases, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Monday announced that night curfew will be imposed across the state from 11 pm to 5 am, Chief Minister's Office said.

Andhra Pradesh logged 1,257 fresh COVID cases, taking the cumulative caseload to 20,81,859, the health department stated in its 9 am bulletin on January 9. Two more people succumbed due to coronavirus, pushing the death toll to 14,505, the data stated.

The state reported 140 recoveries, taking the total recoveries to 20,62,580.

According to the health bulletin, the number of active cases increased to 4,774.

Of the total fresh coronavirus infections, Chittoor district registered the highest 254 fresh cases, Visakhapatnam 196, Anantapuramu 138, Krishna 117, Guntur 104 and SPS Nellore 103. East Godavari logged 93 COVID infections, Vizianagaram 83 and Srikakulam 55.

Meanwhile, several states, including Maharashtra, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and several others have imposed restrictions to curb the COVID outbreak which has been fuelled by the Omicron variant.

Amid COVID spike across the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting with particular focus on the preparedness in wake of rise in coronavirus cases fueled by the Omicron variant.
