The AP government had cleared the proposal to establish a university in Prakasam district.
The cabinet meeting held on Wednesday cleared the proposal and named the university as Andkra Kesari University, in honour of freedom fighter and Tanguturi Prakasam Panthulu, the first chief minister of Andhra State. The district was also named after this great leader.
The new university would come up at Pernamitta village of Santhanuthalapadu mandal in Prakasam district.
The university would have 19 departments with 50 teaching staff and 50 non-teaching staff initially.
The university was given permission to start with 1000 students in the first year.
The cabinet decision would end the long-pending demand of the people of the district for separate university.
Till now, it has a regional study center of the Acharya Nagarjuna University at Ongole, the district headquarters.
