Actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay’s wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam, has filed a petition seeking divorce, bringing an end to their 27-year marriage.
The couple married in August 1999 and have two children, Jason Sanjay and Divya Shasha.
The divorce petition has been filed under provisions of the Special Marriage Act, 1954, which allow dissolution of marriage on grounds such as adultery and cruelty.
According to the petition, Sangeetha (48) has alleged that Vijay (51) was involved in an extramarital relationship with a female actor.
She claimed that she became aware of the alleged affair in 2021 and that, despite assurances from Vijay that it would end, the relationship continued.
The petition further states that Vijay allegedly excluded Sangeetha from his social and professional life and continued to travel abroad and attend public events with the said actor.
It claims that photographs from these outings were regularly shared on social media and that Vijay neither denied nor objected to the posts, which Sangeetha said caused repeated humiliation to her and their children.
Sangeetha has also alleged that Vijay withdrew facilities she previously enjoyed and imposed financial restrictions, including curtailing her freedom of movement.
She stated that his “continued adulterous conduct” and recurring social media controversies in 2024 caused her severe mental trauma.
According to the petition, the marriage has effectively ceased to exist and survives only on paper. Sangeetha asserted that the relationship is beyond repair and has resulted in “mental agony, indignity, humiliation and suffering.”
These allegations form the basis of the divorce plea under Sections 27(1)(a) and 27(1)(d) of the Special Marriage Act, which deal with adultery and cruelty. The matter is currently pending before the district court.
Sangeetha, the daughter of a Tamil industrialist, was reportedly a devoted fan of Vijay before their marriage.
The couple’s wedding on August 25, 1999, was a grand event conducted with both Hindu and Christian rituals.
