Social Media's Film Campaigns: An Utter Failure

Social media campaigns appear to work far more effectively for negativity than for positive promotion, especially in politics and films.

If someone starts a social media channel dedicated to praising a political party, it rarely gains strong traction. However, when the same platform focuses on criticizing or throwing mud at a party, the attention and engagement rise sharply.

The reality is that many people seem more drawn to negative narratives than positive ones when it comes to political discussions online.

The same pattern can be seen in the film industry as well.

A social media channel run by a husband and wife recently campaigned aggressively for a newly released film. They interviewed even the main cast and continuously promoted the movie across their platforms. 

Despite this extensive positive coverage, the film failed to secure even reasonable openings at the box office. Eventually, it ended up as a disaster because the content itself was weak. 

This incident once again shows that social media positivity alone cannot sustain interest if the core product lacks strength.

Interestingly, social media does show a different trend in certain areas. Content related to health, fitness and lifestyle; and religious preachings often gains genuine traction when it is informative and positive.

Viewers actively engage with videos that offer useful health tips, wellness advice or practical guidance for better living. In these cases, positivity seems to work because the audience directly benefits from the information being shared.

Overall, social media platforms tend to amplify controversy, criticism and conflict more easily than appreciation.

While positive promotion can create some visibility, it rarely generates the same level of engagement as negative narratives. This pattern highlights an important reality of the digital age. Attention on social media is often driven less by appreciation and more by provocation.

On a whole, the bottom line is that films trying to rely on social media positive campaigns may end up regretting at the end.
