Priya Kapur Faces Succession Row in Rs 30,000 Cr Sona Group

Priya Sachdev Kapur, wife of late businessman Sunjay Kapur, has found herself at the heart of a high-stakes battle for control of a ₹30,000-crore business empire.

The controversy came to light on July 25, when Rani Kapur—Sunjay’s mother—wrote a letter to the board of the Sona Group ahead of its annual general meeting.

In her letter, Rani Kapur identified herself as the majority shareholder and alleged that she was “compelled to sign various documents without explanation” after her son’s death.

Though not named directly, the letter hinted at Priya Sachdev Kapur, accusing “certain people” of falsely representing the family.

Who is Priya Sachdev Kapur?

Born in Delhi, Priya is the daughter of automobile dealer Ashok Sachdev. A former model turned investment professional, she holds a degree in mathematics and business management from University College London (UCL) and also studied briefly at UCLA.

Early in her career, Priya worked in mergers and acquisitions at Credit Suisse First Boston in London before returning to India.

Over the years, she held leadership roles in automotive retail, insurance, fashion, and e-commerce.

She also founded TSG International Marketing Pvt. Ltd. and co-founded Rock N Shop, one of India’s early luxury e-commerce ventures.

Currently, she serves as a non-executive director at Sona Comstar and director at Aureus Investment, the Kapur family’s investment firm. She also leads Aureus Polo, the polo team established by her late husband.

A Life in the Public Eye

Priya's personal life has often been under public scrutiny. Her first marriage was to American hotelier Vikram Chatwal.

Though glamorous on the surface, she later revealed in a 2025 interview that the relationship was emotionally difficult.

During her pregnancy, she realized the marriage was unsustainable but stayed on for a few years for the sake of her child. The couple divorced in 2011 after a protracted custody battle, which Priya won.

In 2017, she married Sunjay Kapur, who was previously married to actress Karisma Kapoor. The couple had a son, Azarias. Sunjay passed away from a heart attack on June 12 during a polo match in England.

A Brewing Legal Storm

With Sunjay’s sudden passing, Priya now faces not just personal loss but also growing public and legal scrutiny.

As tensions escalate within one of India’s most prominent auto industry families, a bitter legal battle over succession and control of the Sona Group appears imminent.

All eyes are now on Priya Sachdev Kapur as she navigates the storm.
