Audiences in the Telugu film industry are visiting theatres less frequently, and while high prices for food and drinks are a valid concern, they aren’t the only reason.
Producer Naga Vamsi, who is currently promoting his upcoming film Kingdom, pointed out how expensive it’s become even for him.
He shared an experience where he ended up paying over Rs 1200 just for two popcorns and two drinks at a multiplex, which he felt exorbitant.
He acknowledged that the pricing is unreasonable, especially for families, and urged the government to regulate these costs.
Though some regional theatres might consider lowering prices, national multiplex chains are unlikely to change unless the government intervenes as per Naga Vamshi.
He emphasized that these high expenses, along with ticket prices, make theatre visits a costly outing for many families.
But beyond affordability, the real issue lies in the content.
People don’t skip theatres just because of expensive snacks — they skip them when films haven’t been compelling enough. Even if popcorn was free, they wouldn’t come unless the movie draws them in.
When families do find a film worth watching, as Naga Vamshi mentioned, many among them may not be willing to spend on snacks and so sticking on to OTTs.
So while Naga Vamsi is right about the prices, strong storytelling is just as important; in a way he is right, but not completely.
