Mayasabha Sparks Political Firestorm Online Despite 'Fiction' Tag

Director Deva Katta’s web series Mayasabha has set off a storm on social media. In fact, calling it a “discussion” would be an understatement — it has turned into a full-blown battle.

With characters resembling Chandrababu Naidu and Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, the series has triggered strong criticism from both YSR fans and Chandrababu supporters.

In the show, the director added a love track for the Chandrababu-inspired character. Netizens are speculating that this reflects a real incident from his college days, where a girl supposedly rejected him and later became a famous actress. In reality, this is entirely fictional.

The YSR-inspired character has also sparked debate. Some social media users claim the series portrays factionalism and Naxalism as having peaked during his tenure, and accuse the show of depicting YSR as heavily favouring the Reddy community. These scenes have led to a wave of trolling.

Adding to the controversy, the climax shows the Chandrababu-like character being “forced” by circumstances to betray the NTR-like character.

The series even has him say that, despite having no fault of his own, he must bear the “traitor” label for the sake of the party — a portrayal many strongly oppose.

Critics argue that the series wrongly depicts him as intentionally betraying his uncle for political reasons. The NTR character’s shoe-throwing incident outside a hotel is also shown in a way that distances the Chandrababu-like character from any involvement.

As a result, Mayasabha has become the centre of intense social media battles, with accusations and counter-accusations flying from both sides — proving that even when labelled as fiction, the show still manages to ignite real-life fights.
