The Malayalam film L2 opened to high expectations and grossed ₹87 crore in Kerala. But what’s surprising is that Thudarum, released a month later with little hype, has surpassed L2 at the Kerala box office.
Featuring Mohanlal, Prithviraj, and Tovino Thomas, L2 managed ₹87 crore in its full theatrical run, while Thudarum is now on track to become the first Malayalam film to gross ₹100 crore in Kerala alone.
Despite minimal pre-release buzz, Thudarum has emerged as a massive success.
According to trade analysts, it has grossed ₹100 crore in Kerala and another ₹90 crore across the rest of India and overseas. Given its modest budget and low expectations, these numbers are considered exceptional.
Even without major promotions, the Telugu dubbed version of Thudarum collected nearly ₹2 crore.
Interestingly, while Malayalam actors have been promoting select films in the Telugu market, they seem to be neglecting low-key releases like Thudarum.
Released with its original Malayalam title and minimal marketing, the film still managed to earn respectable numbers in the Telugu states.
Meanwhile, the OTT release of Thudarum has reportedly been postponed.
As per the initial agreement, it was supposed to premiere last week, but with the film performing exceptionally well in Kerala and maintaining strong word-of-mouth, the makers have decided to delay its digital release.
Although Thudarum released in theatres on April 25, it is now expected to arrive on OTT sometime in June.
