Early reactions to the Telugu comedy Funky have been sharply divided following its premiere.
Directed by Anudeep K.V. of Jathi Ratnalu fame, the film stars Vishwak Sen in the lead, blending quirky romance with satire on the film industry.
The movie also features cameo appearances by producers Dil Raju and Naga Vamsi.
A section of viewers has been critical, pointing to what they call a mismatch between Vishwak Sen’s style and Anudeep’s brand of comedy.
Common complaints include choppy editing, repetitive gags, weak plotting, and uneven narration. Several early ratings have hovered low ratings, with reports of a few audience members even walking out mid-show.
One viewer wrote, “A messy collection of random comedy scenes. A couple of jokes land, but most feel forced and exhausting. There’s almost no story, and the narration is weak. Choppy editing and dubbing issues make it worse. Cameos and satire try to save it, but the songs and BGM are forgettable. Clearly not Vishwak Sen’s zone. Overall, a disappointing below-average film.”
Another comment echoed similar sentiment, stating, “Anudeep’s jokes didn’t land. Vishwak Sen was the worst choice. Forced Dil and Chimtu cameos.”
However, not all reactions were negative. A section of the audience appreciated the clean humour, light-hearted tone, and satirical take on family dynamics and current film trends. Some viewers also felt the climax had sharp zingers that worked well.
One fan posted, “Went for laughs, and Funky didn’t disappoint me. Had fun.”
Another review described the film as “just average,” adding that it needed the lead actor to carry the comedy with strong timing, which, according to the viewer, did not quite happen. The reviewer also expressed disappointment with Anudeep’s work as both writer and director.
Overall, Funky appears to have opened to mixed word of mouth, with audiences clearly split on its humour and execution.
