'CDH Formula', The Only Safe Bet In Indian Cinema

Comedy, devotional, and horror films together form what can be called the CDH formula in Indian cinema today. These genres have consistently proven to be relatively safe bets at the box office.

Even when they release with bad talk, they often manage to recover costs and sometimes deliver profits. Recent examples across Telugu and Hindi cinema highlight this pattern clearly.

Within this, comedy horror has shown stronger traction than pure horror. Films like Masooda, Virupaksha, Kishkindhapuri, Raakasa worked well, despite average to minimal talk. Stree 2 is a strong example of how comedy plus horror combination appeals to a wider audience.

Even films such as Thamma and Bhoot Bangla, despite receiving negative early talk, managed to sustain collections and avoid outright failure. This reflects the audience’s willingness to engage with entertaining horror rather than intense standalone horror.

Devotional cinema is another pillar of the CDH formula. Films like HanuMan, Karthikeya 2, and Mahavatar Narasimha have performed strongly by tapping into cultural and spiritual sentiments.

Even Adipurush, despite criticism, managed decent collections, though a budget failure. The upcoming Ramayana is expected to reinforce this trend further.

Comedy, especially youth driven content, is also thriving. Small films like Little Hearts have shown that relatable humor can work wellin Telugu. Upcoming Telugu releases like Gayapadda Simham and Jetlee are following this route.

If they succeed in delivering consistent laughs for a significant portion of their runtime, they have a strong chance of working at the box office under the reliable CDH formula.

On a whole making Comedy-Horror and Devotional prove safe bets when compared to any other genres, unless made phenomenally well.
