Actress On South Indian Cinema's Navel Obsession

Actress Daisy Shah, who has acted in several Kannada films, recently spoke about what she called the industry’s unusual “navel obsession.”

She recalled watching Kannada songs during her film shoot and noticing a repeated pattern; close up shots of heroines’ navels, often with fruit salads, ice, or water being placed or poured on them.

Though Daisy did not mention any names, social media users quickly speculated that she was indirectly referring to actor-filmmaker V Ravichandran, known for such unique song sequences.

Many online comments joked about his style, with one user even calling him “Chief Navel Officer.”

Some Telugu netizens also mentioned about K Raghavendra Rao, the director who pioneered 'navel obsession' in South Indian cinema, the path on which even Ravinchandran went on.

This is not the first time the subject has come up. A few months earlier, actress Malavika Mohanan had also commented on how South Indian cinema often highlights actresses’ navels.

She admitted it felt strange coming from Mumbai, where such focus was uncommon, but said the “navel obsession” is indeed very real.
