The Master Blaster is now a Rajya Sabha MP. Of course Twitter is buzzing with this news, but here’s a trend I never in my darkest dreams thought I would see. # UnfollowSachin.
What is this country coming to? Thankfully, the Twitterati by and large are peaceful people, else we would probably have had riots on the streets for what the more discerning ( read obsessive) cricket fan would consider sacrilege.
“Sachin’s visit to Sonia proves even God can be bought if the price is right … # unfollowsachin,” tweeted a rather disgruntled sounding fan, Defeating Autism (@ gkundra).
Agreeing with Kundra is Alka Dwivedi (@ alka_ d), who believes that Sachin’s descent into politics is all part of a big Congress conspiracy. She tweeted: “Sad that Sachin is playing right into the hands of Congress. Sadder part is that he doesn’t seem to realize that. #unfollowsachin.”
If you’re a Sachin fan and this has your blood boiling, wait till you hear the bomb S. Ranganathan (@ rangats) dropped with his tweet: “It is an insult to Indian democracy that a person who has been auctioned is being chosen as a Rajya Sabha MP.” ( Wonder if he could get into trouble for inciting a riot?) Like the pen, the keyboard is mightier than the sword. And for every hater who thought people should unfollow Sachin, there were at least two people hating the haters.
“Y # unfollowsachin? I think it’s great that he goes to the Rajya Sabha. Better than many others who have gone before,” tweeted director Shekhar Kapur (@ shekharkapur). Seeing some of our past MPs, this is something no one can deny.
Mohammad Omar showed a little more aggression: “# UnfollowSachin is trending. Those participating in this hashtag and reading this tweet, please know that you are a certified douche bag.”
Of course, he means people reading this on Twitter, not this column, so please carry on reading. Clifford (@ cliffordsouza) floated a conspiracy theory. “ Unfollow Sachin is a ridiculously cheap publicity stunt attempted by BJP supporters on Twitter and no doubt they are failing big time,” he tweeted.
Thankfully, this # followsachin- # unfollowsachin battle was broken by the odd little bit of comic relief. “ Harbhajan Singh has been talking in hashtags ever since he became the MI skipper. His first order was # UnfollowSachin,” joked ROFL Indian (@ roflindian).
Staying with IPL humour, here is a gem by Ashwin S. Kumar (@ ashwinskumar): “ Sachin after becoming RS MP: ‘ Congress similar to Mumbai Indians.
It is also captained by a Sardar and owned by a woman’.” The UnRealTimes (@ TheUnRealTimes) tweeted: “ BREAKING NEWS After nomination to Rajya Sabha, Sachin Tendulkar transfers Little Master title to Rahul Gandhi.” Also trending for her Rajya Sabha nomination was veteran actor Rekha. “ Rajya Sabha MPs make a beeline for stylists and tailors … in anticipation of Rekha’s arrival,” tweeted Suhel Seth (@ suhelseth). Her nomination, thankfully, wasn’t quite as controversial as that of the Little Master.
