HYDERABAD: Cops of the Central Crime Station (CCS) cracked an international source code theft and arrested a top honcho of iNEK Technologies Limited in the city on Wednesday.
Kunapareddy Sita Venkata Ravi Kumar alias Ravi, 33, had worked as a software engineer for Tecra Systems, which has offices at Srinagar Colony in the city and Farmington Hills in Michigan, USA.
He had worked on development of various applications and products like AccuConnect, AuctionLogik, Vanso, MemberLogik and Cmail of Tecra Systems.
According to deputy commissioner of police (detective department) R S Praveen Kumar, Ravi, who was one of the senior-most employees in Tecra, had administrator access to Tecra servers and softwares both in India as well as in the US.
In 2005, Tecra Systems had transferred Ravi Kumar to its office in the US on H-1 B visa.
While working at the US office, Ravi allegedly stole products and custom applications developed for various clients of Tecra Systems by copying them into his personal laptop.
In June 2007, Ravi had resigned from Tecra Systems, saying that he would work for Microsoft in Washington as an independent contractor and Tecra relieved him.
A sales manager of Tecra Systems was making calls to prospective customers to sell their products and in the process they realised that someone else had already given a demo of a similar product.
"On enquiry, Tecra Systems found that Ravi Kumar gave the demo to sell the same products in the market," Praveen Kumar said.
On a complaint lodged by Krishna Prasad Gondi, managing director of Tecra Systems Private Limited, a case was registered (Crime number 194/2008) under sections 420, 406, 380 of IPC and sections 65, 66 of the IT Act on August 19 and a cyber crime team led by detective department ACP, B Narayana, conducted an investigation. During the course of an investigation, police found that Ravi Kumar was working as IT director of application development at iNEK Technologies, which has offices at Raj Bhavan Road, Hyderabad and Kansas, USA.
