Hyderabad, July 17 (INN): Our currency may have a symbol of its own, but how many person who deal with currencies really care?
All major newspapers heralded the announcement that the Indian Rupee will now have a distinct symbol of its own, by publishing the news on their front pages. The television channels, too kept the viewers informed about the Indian Rupee joining four other currencies in the world with distinct symbols.
When INN tried to get reaction from people who work in money transfer firms and accountants, their answers surprised us.
Most of these people were even unaware of the symbol, let alone answer questions whether the new symbol will have any impact on the Rupee as such.
Akram, who works with a money transfer company, said that he was seeing the new symbol the first time when INN showed it to him.
He took a careful look at it and said that it reminded him of something, but could not recall what.
Ashutosh, working in another money transfer company, peered at the symbol and asked if it was going to become mandatory to use the symbol when writing any amount. He asked if this symbol will replace the ‘Rs’.
When explained about the symbol, Ashutosh smiled and said that, “it is a laudable effort on the government’s part. This proves that the government is trying to do something different.”
Most of the people working in such companies expressed their indifference to the new symbol. They said that for them, the only difference will be to replace the ‘Rs’ with the symbol on the boards where they display the daily exchange rates.
