Intense Competition for OPT H-1B visa Registration?

Intense Competition for OPT H-1B visa Registration?

Ready or not, H-1B Cap Registration Season is upon us. This year marks the second year that USCIS has used the H-1B electronic registration process where employers will participate in electronic registration by paying a $10 fee for prospective H-1b Petitioners.

Big news for OPT students is that wage-based H-1B visa lottery selection process has been delayed till Dec 31st 2021, this new selection process would have a devastating effect on OPT Students as most qualifying OPT students are sponsored for lower wage Level 1 H-1B positions, hence less chance of winning H-1B visa.

Given the ease of filing and wage rule delays, there may be huge number of H1-B applications and intense competition.

As per USCIS, Registration period is from March 9th– March 25th, 2021 after which one cannot participate in H-1B Cap program. Employers will be notified about the selection by March 31st, following which they will be given at least 90 days to file the H-1B petition. Petitioners whose registrations are selected in the lottery will be invited to file full H-1B petitions beginning April 1.

Given the uncertainty F-1 students with two or three years of OPT left, should give it a try now and take advantage of filing H-1B.
