We are all witnessing how serious the immigration and legal environment in the United States has become.
Recently, a student was deported for a traffic violation — failing to give way to an ambulance. Though she later fought the case legally and won, the incident shows how sensitive the situation is for international students.
In this context, it's extremely disappointing to see some Telugu students in the US behaving irresponsibly.
During convocation ceremonies at certain universities, some students are seen holding up banners of political parties like Janasena, TDP, and YCP when their names are called on stage.
This is causing embarrassment to the universities, prompting officials to immediately intervene, ask students to put the banners away, and usher them off stage.
Such behavior is not only disgraceful to the university but also damages the image of the Telugu community and India as a whole.
Parents in India are taking out loans and making sacrifices to send their children to study in the US, expecting them to focus on academics and personal growth — not engage in cheap political theatrics.
What’s more concerning is that some NRI supporters of these political parties in the US are allegedly encouraging such behavior by offering food and liquor — like biryani and beer — to students. This mirrors the unethical practices back in India, where people are lured to political rallies with free meals and alcohol.
What, then, is the difference between these so-called "educated" students and the uneducated masses who attend political events for freebies?
It is truly disheartening. Telugu students in the US are being used by political parties to conduct rallies, flash banners, and create disturbances.
Fans of film stars are also exploiting them during movie releases to throw cut pieces of news papers, chant slogans, and cause chaos in theaters — behavior that reflects poorly on everyone involved.
It’s a pity to see many Telugu students acting in such an irresponsible manner, and even more unfortunate that some NRIs are enabling them with bribes of liquor and food for disgraceful acts.
