A milestone has been achieved in the history of Nizam' s Institute of Medical Sciences , when Prof. D Prasada Rao, Director of NIMS along with his Cardiac Surgery colleagues Dr A. Dharma Rakshak, Dr John Wesley, Dr Prashant P Prabhu and Anaesthesia colleagues Prof. Srinivas Mantha and Dr Narmada has done Heart Transplantation in NIMS for the first time.
Mr. Y Gopi a 28 year old man who is a case of severe heart failure has been operated last night and received a new lease of life in the form of a normal heart from a brain dead patient. This young man has been suffering with recurrent heart failure and has been attending Cardiology OPD of Dr Sarat Chandra, Addl. Professor of Cardiology for the last 3 years.
For the last one year patient is having extreme state of weakness and heart failure and was admitted several times in the Intensive care unit of Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences.
Despite high doses of medicines, his condition looked hopeless and Dr Sarat Chandra has motivated him to undergo Cardiac Transplantation as and when a suitable donor is available.
The patient has been staying in the premises of NIMS hoping against hope for a suitable donor. The patient's waiting and the doctors efforts have borne fruit yesterday when kind hearted relatives and wife of the accident victim have agreed to donate his heart, liver and kidneys when it became clear that brain damage is too much and that he is beyond recovery.
Everything fell into place and not only this patient but 3 more patients, 2 cases of chronic kidney failure and one case of liver failure also received kidney and liver transplantation yesterday at NIMS and different hospitals in twin cities from the same donor. All the above is made possible because of the close cooperation and excellent team work of doctors, nurses, perfusionists, Medicosocial workers and Hospital Administrators.
