Covid Patients' Bill: Andhra Vs Telangana

Covid Patients' Bill: Andhra Vs Telangana

Ever since the lockdown restrictions are eased, the Covid-19 cases are on the rise. The livelihood of the majority of people depends on jobs and small businesses so they can't stay at home forever.

Unless people go to work, they can't feed their family members. That makes them prone to Covid-19 infections risk more than the people who are sitting at home.

If we talk about the patients in Telugu states, very few people have got a clear picture of what is happening with a patient when he gets infected with Covid-19.

Earlier, the governments of Telugu states used to take care of the medical expenses so the people used to just go through the isolation and treatment.

With the increasing number of cases, the Telangana government has given permission to some private hospitals to treat Covid-19 patients.

But the AP government continuing the free treatment. Some corporate hospitals have already started treating Covid-19 patients in Telangana.

The government has passed strict guidelines for corporate hospitals in treating Covid-19 patients. Not more than Rs.4,000 should be charged for a general bed per day, Rs.7,500 for the bed with oxygen and Rs.9,000 for a bed in the ICU with ventilator support.

If we do a rough calculation, a patient stays in an ICU for 10 days, it would be Rs.90,000.   Of course, they are aware of the additional charges. But they are thinking that the additional charges would not exceed the total bed charges. So, this would be roughly around Rs, 1.5 lakhs.

If this is your calculation, then you are wrong.

Some Covid-19 patients who already discharged from the corporate hospitals are sharing their bills on social media giving a shocker to the netizens. A patient recently got admitted to a reputed corporate hospital in Hyderabad. He was discharged after five days of treatment. The total bill was Rs.3.5 lakhs.

The bed charges for five days is 72,000.  This is only one fifth of the total bill.

They collected the charges of PPE Kits and it was 45,000 in the bill.  Some people may be of the opinion that the cost of medicines is very less. But it is  Rs.72,000 and the laboratory charges around a whopping 53,000 etc.

If five days bill is three and a half lakhs, what if a patient stays for a period of 14 days?

People have many doubts about these Covid-19 hospitalizations whether they are covered under the health insurance policies are not.

This is the situation of corporate hospitals in Telangana.

On the other hand, the situation is completely different in the neighboring AP.

Covid-19 tests are free in AP, if a person is tested positive he will be given treatment free of cost. The patients are given nutritious food without any charge. On top of it, the government is giving Rs.2,000 for the patient who got discharged after taking the treatment.

Some people ridicule this on social media but the logic behind giving money is to encourage the poor people to come forward for the treatment rather than keeping the infection as a secret and becoming a vehicle for corona infections in his family and the neighborhood.
