It is exactly today the last year when the entire nation stood on its feet not out of joy but out of fear. A fear that has struck the heart of every Indian and all this due to the handiwork of just ten young men whose sole mission was to kill or get killed. It is the Mumbai terror attacks that left a deep impact on many conscious citizens. Well, it has been a year and what has the system done to ensure that such things don’t repeat, have there been any lessons learnt? Let us see –
- ‘Force One’ has been made ready in Mumbai to meet any such eventualities
- Special NSG units across various important cities including Hyderabad stationed.
Well, the list ends here since there is nothing more from the system. However, here is a list of lessons that are yet to be learnt:
- Poor monitoring of security at important commercial establishments
- Eye wash arrangement of CCTV units and metal detectors that hardly work
- Several vulnerable points in many public sector establishments that can be taken by a single bomb
- Poor infrastructure and shield capacity
- Lazy security personnel who lack fitness
- No armory or sophisticated weapons given for the security personnel
- No proper disaster plan set in paper and in terms of implementation
- Not enough awareness created by the government among the citizens except for spreading fear by recalling the incident
- Biased control over media
- Lack of strong intelligence network
- Corrupt officials and not enough integrity in scooping out many terrorists and their links
- Lack of efficiency in judiciary and no strong arm tactics in external affairs to create pressure on the accused criminals and bring them to justice
- Shallow threats on crushing terrorism
- Little or no protection for malls, multiplexes
The list goes on but the point to be noted is, though it has been a year, there is hardly any measure taken by the government to show that India is in a condition to confront any such attack.
What would happen if RDX is planted and the killers walk off smoothly? The focus that is made on preserving the power and chair, if the leaders can look at doing half of it to save the nation, the country would be somewhere. A lot is said during press meets and conferences but in reality, there is no concrete action or implementation. The terror attacks happened last year but even today the common man lives not in hope but in fear of what are going to come next. One day, the system must wake up and the authorities must take a conscious responsibility of protecting this country, hope that happens soon.
