10 Promises Trump Made For His First Day as US President

NEW YORK: In his inaugural speech today, US President Donald Trump today promised Americans that he was "taking power from Washington DC and giving it to you, the people," that they will never be "ignored again".

The billionaire tycoon, who is also a reality TV star, took oath as the 45th President of the United States at a glittering function attended by politicians, judges, diplomats and the members of the public.

Fighting on an isolationist, protectionist plank, Mr Trump won the presidency in November after one of the most controversial and divisive elections in the US history.

While Mr Trump won with 304 electoral votes, his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton won the popular vote.

Mr Trump takes office as one of the least popular new president over the last 40 years, a new Washington Post/ABC News poll has said.

Today's huge crowd at the Washington DC is expected to include a chunk of protesters, who have promised to "paralyse" the US capital.

More than 50 Democratic lawmakers have also said they will stay away from the ceremony. Protests have also been planned in other cities of the US and abroad.

A look at 10 of the key promises Trump made for his first day as president:

- Introduce a constitutional amendment for congressional term limits.

- Freeze hiring for the federal government to reduce payrolls, although the military, public safety and public health agencies would be exempt.

- Ban White House and congressional officials from becoming lobbyists for five years after they leave the government.

- Announce plans to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico or withdraw from the deal.

- Formally withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

- Lift restrictions on mining coal and drilling for oil and natural gas.

- Remove any Obama-era roadblocks to energy projects such as the Keystone XL pipeline.

- Cancel US payments to UN climate change programs and redirect the money to US water and environmental infrastructure.

- Stop all federal funding to "sanctuary cities," places where local officials don't arrest or detain immigrants living in the country illegally for federal authorities.

- Suspend immigration from regions associated with terrorism where vetting is difficult.
