Now, Telangana Hurdle For Polavaram!

It looks like Telugu Desam Party president and Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu's ambition of completing the Polavaram project on Godavari river before the next elections is turning out to be difficult with more and more hurdles coming in the way.

The latest hurdle for the prestigious Polavaram project is Telangana.

On Wednesday, the Telangana government submitted an affidavit to the Supreme Court stating that the construction of Polavaram Irrigation Project would adversely impact the interests of Telangana.

It argued that no further studies have been carried out by Andhra Pradesh to ascertain as to what is the exact area that could be submerged due to all effects including backwaters with probable maximum flood (PMF) of 50 lakh cusecs, as approved by CWC.

Hence, the Telangana government urged the Supreme Court to direct the Central government to assess the PMF afresh.

The Telangana government said the impact on the Telangana due to the Polavaram project had never been properly assessed.

It informed the apex court that around 100 villages in nine mandals including Bhadrachalam, Dummugudem, Cherla, Wazedu, Venkatapuram, Burgampadu, Manuguru, Ashwapuram and Pinapaka are prone to major hazards due to Godavari floods.
