Faith Matters: Domination of Saivites in Tollywood

History has many stories where the Saivaites and Vaishnavaites have fought for domination saying that their god was bigger than the others’ god. Finally, there was truce that Sivakesavulu were one and the same.

Film industry is one place where people of all faiths work together.

But if one looks closely, there are minute differences that prevail. Of late, the industry is being dominated by Saivaites.

References to worshipping Siva have increased in the past few years and many say that’s because many artistes and technicians are Saivaites.

One primary example is that of director K Vishwanath who only wants songs written on Siva.

Similarly, Tanikella Bharani has also come up with a collection of devotional poems titled Aatagadaraa Siva.

Ramajogayya Sastri and Sirivennela Seetaramasastry have all written songs on Siva mostly.

Only late Bapu concentrated on Vaishnavaite tradition and his songs usually focused on Rama, Krishna, etc.

If one looks at it, Tamilians are mostly Vaishnavaites while Kannadigas are mostly Saivaites. On the other hand, Malayalees follow the Vaishnavaite traditions.

In fact, many music directors and singers also belong to the Saivaite sect in Tollywood.

However, in the past, many directors were Vaishnavaites and that is why there were many films based on Ramayanam and Mahabharatam.

But of late, many film people are Saivaites.
