Opinion: What Hurts The Most?

In recent times, there have been a couple of incidents in which the Western Powers have mocked India by taking the latter for granted.

First it was Barack Obama who was given the grandest ever welcome ever accorded to any visiting dignitary in India.

Obama screwed it all up by speaking on communal harmony in India and lecturing India on maintaining its secular traditions. He continued with the rant even after going back to the US which ironically has been witnessing a spate of attacks on temples, and blacks and is notorious for racial profiling.

And now, ignoring the diktat by India, the BBC went ahead with its broadcast of the documentary, ‘India’s daughter’, dealing with the Nirbhaya incident.

Truth be told, there is nothing controversial about the documentary nor is there anything demeaning about India in the documentary.

It takes an objective view at the horrific tragedy that shook up India and also comes out with valuable insights on how to change the perverted mindsets in society in general.

But in the first place, the fact that the BBC did not even talk to the Indian authorities before going ahead with their broadcast is what hurts the most!

Both Obama and the BBC were completely immune to the effect of their actions on the Indian government and did not care for the fact that this would lower the prestige of the Indian government.

We need co-operation from the Western powers but not at the expense of our self-respect.

When Pakistan started shelling on the border, we gave it back in double dose forcing them to give up their foolish strategy. We need to adopt a similar stance with the likes of Obama and BBC.

At this juncture, we would be better off remembering that all the sanctions in the world imposed on India after our nuclear tests could not deter the Vajpayee government and India from going ahead with its developmental agenda. Jai Hind!
