Official: GHMC Becomes India's Largest Civic Body

The Telangana government on Thursday officially notified the expanded Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), making it the largest municipal corporation in the country.

The notification marked the finalisation of boundaries for 300 newly delimited wards across the city.

As part of the restructuring, the government has created a new post - Special Chief Secretary, Metropolitan Area and Urban Development (HMDA limits) - to oversee Hyderabad’s growing developmental needs.

Senior IAS officer Jayesh Ranjan has been appointed to the newly created position. Commissioners have also been appointed for the newly formed zones.

Earlier, the GHMC covered an area of about 650 square kilometres, comprising six zones, 30 circles, and 150 wards.

With the expansion, the civic body now spans nearly 2,000 square kilometres and consists of 12 zones, 60 circles, and 300 wards. In terms of size, the expanded GHMC is now comparable to Mauritius and is nearly three times the size of Singapore.

Along with the existing zones; Charminar, Serilingampally, Kukatpally, Secunderabad, Khairatabad, and LB Nagar; the GHMC now includes six new zones: Malkajgiri, Uppal, Shamshabad, Rajendranagar, Golconda, and Quthbullapur.

Details of the new ward boundaries have been displayed on notice boards at circle offices, zonal offices, and the GHMC head office. The expansion comes after the merger of 27 urban local bodies into the GHMC limits.

According to the Municipal Administration and Urban Development department, the population under GHMC has now crossed 1.34 crore.

The expansion and decentralisation are aimed at ensuring better governance, uniform administration, improved service delivery, and greater convenience for citizens.

Officials said the ward delimitation has also been aligned with preparations for the next decadal census scheduled for 2026–27.
