Hyderabad: Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu may announce on Thursday which city will be crowned as the new capital of Andhra Pradesh.
Reports said Naidu may make the announcement post 12 noon. The announcement was expected Tuesday but was delayed, as per sources, due to astrological reasons.
The government is expected to pick the stretch between Guntur and Vijayawada towns as the new state capital. Land prices have already soared there over the past month in anticipation of the move.
Meanwhile on Wednesday, the Assembly witnessed fireworks when ruling TD and opposition YSR Congress members traded charges on the issue of the capital city leading to adjournment of the House for the day.
Leader of the Opposition Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy asked, “How can the government unilaterally decide where the capital should be located without discussing the Sivaramakrishnan Committee report?”
Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy recalled that in July 1953, the Assembly had discussed the capital city issue for five days when the erstwhile Andhra state was carved out.
Voting was also conducted to determine the capital’s location.
“We want a discussion and voting on the capital now as well. If that doesn’t happen, what is the Assembly for?” he asked.
