Vegetable Vendor Receives Rs 29 Lakh GST Notice

Vegetable Vendor Receives Rs 29 Lakh GST Notice

A vegetable vendor in Karnataka has been served a Rs 29 lakh Goods and Services Tax (GST) notice after his UPI transactions totaled Rs 1.63 crore over four years.

The vendor, who operates a small roadside stall, primarily deals in cashless transactions through digital payment platforms like UPI and Google Pay.

His case has drawn public attention due to the disparity between his modest livelihood and the high GST demand.

Authorities reportedly flagged the volume of digital transactions, assuming it reflected unreported business income.

However, the vendor claims these were routine payments from regular customers, and not indicative of large-scale business operations.

Many such vendors who make good income out of sales generally use 3 to 4 QR codes related to their family members' bank accounts to avoid hitting the GST slab of Ra 20 lakh turnover per annum. Those who are not aware of it are getting flagged.

Similar situation was faced by a panipuri vendor a few months ago for making Rs 40 lakh in an year and not listed on GST.

This shows how lucrative are some businesses when compared to software jobs.
