Why did Naidu touch Parliament steps?

Telugu Desam Party president and Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu sprang a surprise on Tuesday, when he did a Narendra Modi while entering Parliament to enter the Central hall.

Naidu, who went to New Delhi for a two-day visit, went to Parliament for the first time in the morning.

After paying floral tributes to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi on the Parliament premises, he moved towards the Central hall.

As he was about to enter the building, he suddenly bowed before the building and touched the steps with his hand, before saluting them.

This reminded one of a similar gesture made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who prostrated before the Parliament and kissed the steps before entering the building, when he came there for the first time in the capacity of the head of the country in 2014.

Modi was never an MP and had never entered Parliament before. So is Naidu, who never contested the Lok Sabha elections and entered the Parliament building.

But there is a big difference between what Modi had done in 2014 and what Naidu did on Tuesday.

According to the BJP sources, Modi had made the gesture out of devotion to the Parliament and had never bothered about the media coverage for it.

“However, if you see the visuals, Naidu was posing for cameras while touching the steps of Parliament. He did it three or four times for the sake of photo opportunity and then stood there with folded hands. All the TDP MPs were also posing for photographs. So, it is pretty evident that Naidu was trying to gain cheap publicity,” a BJP leader said.
