Andhra Pradesh Brahmin Welfare Corporation is supposed to be a body meant for the welfare of the Brahmins in the society. It is also supposed to be a non-political body.
Its first chairman I Y R Krishna Rao, retired chief secretary of Andhra Pradesh, was an IAS officer and had no political connections. He tried to help all the Brahmins irrespective of their personal political affiliations.
And for that, IYR had to face the trouble from the Chandrababu Naidu government. Finally, he was sacked from the post unceremoniously, for the simple reason that he strongly resisted the attempts to convert the corporation into a political body helping only TDP workers.
His successor Vemuri Anand Surya was also originally a non-political person associated with AP Brahmin Society. But after taking over as the chairman of AP Brahmin Welfare Corporation, Anand Surya has turned an out-and-out TDP leader, surrendering his Brahmin welfare agenda before the TDP leaders, particularly Naidu.
So, when Naidu asked Anand Surya to campaign for the TDP in the Nandyal by-elections to garner some Brahmin votes, he has donned the yellow paint and sported TDP khanduwa to campaign for Bhuma Brahmananda Reddy.
He addressed some meetings of Brahmin associations in Nandyal and told them that the chief minister had been working with commitment for the State’s development and will keep all his promises.
He said in spite of the financial crisis, Naidu had executed several development programmes and taken some daring steps which no other governments could do.
Speaking on the proposed development works at Nandyal, he said 13,000 houses will be built near SRBC Colony. Protection wall would be built for Chama Kalva and a fly-over bridge over Kundu River.
The government has also included the names of poor Brahmins in the list of beneficiaries under the recently announced housing scheme, Anand Surya pointed out.
