YSRC supporters sweep 1st phase panchayat polls

YSRC supporters made a near-clean sweep in the village panchayat elections, capturing majority of the seats in most of the 12 districts that went to polls in the first phase on Tuesday.

Though the elections are held on non-party basis, TDP supporters could not make enough impact in some of the revenue divisions in the first phase.

YSRC supporters are likely to bag nearly 80% of panchayats while TDP is expected to win 20% seats.

As per latest reports, of the 3,249 panchayat seats, results have been declared for 3067 seats. YCP is leading with 2434 seats so far, TDP 495, BJP and its local allies 28 and other including independents have won on 110 seats.

Barring a few minor incidents, polling for the first phase ended on a peaceful note. K Girija Shankar, panchayat raj commissioner and state election authority, said the entire polling process was completed without any untoward incident.

Elections in Vizianagaram district are scheduled in the remaining phases. State election commissioner Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar has expressed satisfaction over the conduct of first phase elections.

Interestingly, a record turnout was witnessed for gram panchayats, with over 82% voters exercising their franchise.

A TDP activist, Rambabu, was injured in an attack by rivals at Vedadri village in Jaggaiahpet mandal of Krishna district. He was taken to hospital and is recovering.
