Viveka murder case: Anything else to probe, SC asks CBI

Viveka murder case: Anything else to probe, SC asks CBI

The investigation into the murder of former minister Y S Vivekananda Reddy has taken an interesting turn on Tuesday with the Supreme Court asking the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) whether it feels there is anything else that requires deeper probe into the case.

The SC told the CBI that it would consider the matter if the agency clearly specifies whom it intends to take into custody for further questioning. The court adjourned the next hearing to February 5.

Vivekananda Reddy’s daughter, Sunitha Reddy, had challenged the trial court’s order seeking further investigation in the case. A Bench headed by Justice M. M. Sundresh heard the petition on Tuesday.

Senior advocate Siddharth Luthra, appearing for Sunitha Reddy, submitted that although they had approached the trial court as directed by the Supreme Court, none of the points raised in their petition seeking further investigation were considered.

Instead, he argued, the trial court had taken into account issues not even mentioned in the petition and granted only partial permission for further investigation, which he said was legally untenable.

Justice Sundresh intervened and directly asked the CBI whether it believed that further investigation was necessary in the Vivekananda Reddy murder case.

The Bench directed the agency to clearly spell out the specific aspects that require further probing and also identify the individuals it intends to examine in custody.

In response, counsel for the CBI informed the court that they would need to consult the investigation officer to determine whether further questioning of any individuals was required.

Seeking two weeks’ time to do so, the agency requested an adjournment. Accepting the request, the Supreme Court posted the matter for further hearing on February 5.
