Nimmagadda debunks privilege notice

A day after the Andhra Pradesh assembly serving a privilege notice on him seeking an explanation for his comments on panchayat raj minister Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy, state election commissioner Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar virtually debunked the notice.

In his letter, assembly secretary P Balakrishnamacharyulu asked Nimmagadda to be available for inquiry as per the decision taken by the Privileges Committee of the state legislative assembly. The committee met twice following the notice moved by Peddireddy.

The move came at a time when Nimmagadda is scheduled to avail the Leave Travel Concession (LTC) from March 22 to 24.

In his reply to the letter sent by assembly secretary P Balakrishnamacharyulu, the SEC said he had taken vaccination for Covid-19 and was taking rest in Hyderabad; so, he won’t be in a position to attend any inquiry.

Stating that he had a lot of respect on the assembly and the members of the assembly, Nimmagadda, however, said the privileges committee had no jurisdiction to serve any notice on him.

It may be mentioned that Peddireddy complained to the Speaker stating that the language used by Nimmagadda in his letter to Governor Biswa Bhushan Harichandan against him (minister) was derogatory and was a breach of privilege of an elected representative.

Another minister Botsa Satyanarayana also wrote a similar letter to the Speaker, who in turn referred these letters to the privileges committee.
