Mamata plans to rope in Jagan, ignores Naidu, KCR!

Mamata plans to rope in Jagan, ignores Naidu, KCR!

West Bengal chief minister and Trinamul Congress party chief Mamata Banerjee has begun efforts to bring all the anti-Bharatiya Janata Party forces on to a common platform to stitch in an alternative front before the next general elections to Lok Sabha.

As part of her efforts, Mamata has been meeting leaders of various opposition parties one after the other. In her recent visit to New Delhi, she met Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Aam Admi Party chief and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and a few other leaders.

According to sources, Mamata is also contemplating roping in even neutral parties, which had not been part of either Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) or the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) till now.

During her meeting with the leaders of non-BJP parties, the discussion of bringing neutral parties like YSR Congress party led by Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy and Biju Janata Dal led by Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik into the new front came up for discussion.

These leaders told Mamata that Jagan and Naveen Patnaik, though not part of the NDA, had been friendly towards Narendra Modi government at the Centre for their personal reasons and also in the interest of their respective states.

But Mamata reportedly told them that both Jagan and Patnaik were her good friends and she expressed hope that they would definitely join hands with her in the coming days.

“In the interest of the nation, I appeal to both YSRC and BJD to join hands with us to defeat the BJP. By the time of elections, I am sure all the non-BJP parties will come together,” she told reporters later.

Surprisingly, Mamata did not talk about Telugu Desam Party led by N Chandrababu Naidu and Telangana Rashtra Samithi led by K Chandrasekhar Rao, though both the parties also fall into the non-BJP group.

In fact, before 2019 general elections, Mamata worked closely with Naidu in stitching up a grand alliance and even campaigned for the TDP in Visakhapatnam.

But after the humiliating defeat of TDP in the elections, he conveniently ignored Mamata and other partners of grand alliance and later, started making efforts to come closer to the BJP again.

Similarly, KCR also made a similar attempt to form a federal front in 2018 and met all the non-BJP partners including Mamata Banerjee, but when the attempt failed, he conveniently ignored them.

Though KCR is still a hard core anti-BJP man, Mamata is not interested in him because he does not want the Congress to be part of the anti-BJP front, which she feels is not possible.

That is why she has chosen to ignore him.
