Day 1: Karthi's Lowest Opening in the Post-COVID

Day 1: Karthi's Lowest Opening in the Post-COVID

Vaa Vaathiyaar, starring Karthi along with Krithi Shetty, Rajkiran and Sathyaraj, opened to a disappointing start at the Indian box office.

After Parasakthi failed to deliver, expectations were high for this Pongal release from Kollywood.

However, the film fell short, registering collections of under ₹2 crore on its first day—marking Karthi’s lowest opening in the post-COVID period.

Plagued by multiple delays, Vaa Vaathiyaar struggled to build pre-release buzz, and that lack of momentum was evident in its pre-sales and spot bookings.

Occupancy figures remained modest through the day, with morning shows at around 15%, afternoon shows improving slightly to 22%, evening shows hovering near 20%, and night shows seeing a marginal rise to about 28%.

According to Sacnilk estimates, the film earned approximately ₹1.65 crore net in India on Day 1, translating to around ₹1.94 crore gross. With such an underwhelming start and mixed word of mouth, the road ahead looks challenging.

The Day 1 figure also places Vaa Vaathiyaar below Karthi’s previous lowest post-COVID opener, Meiyazhagan, which had debuted at ₹3.1 crore.

Written and directed by Nalan Kumarasamy, the film is produced by K. E. Gnanavel Raja under the Studio Green banner, with music composed by Santhosh Narayanan.

The supporting cast includes Nizhalgal Ravi, Anandaraj, Shilpa Manjunath and Karunakaran.
