Man Shot Dead By US Immigration Agents In Minneapolis

Federal immigration officers shot and killed a man on Saturday in Minneapolis, triggering fresh protests in a city already tense after another fatal shooting involving immigration authorities just weeks ago.

Details of the incident were not immediately clear. Tim Walz, the Governor of Minnesota, said the shooting happened amid the immigration crackdown launched by the Trump administration.

A hospital record accessed by the Associated Press confirmed that a 51-year-old man shot by immigration officers later died.

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Tricia McLaughlin, told AP that the man was carrying a firearm with two magazines and that the situation was still developing. DHS also released a photo of a handgun they said was found on the man.

The shooting took place amid ongoing daily protests in the Twin Cities following the January 7 killing of Renee Good, a 37-year-old woman who died after an officer from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) fired into her vehicle. Saturday’s incident occurred just over a mile from where Good was shot.

Soon after the latest shooting, hundreds of protesters gathered at the scene. They shouted slogans at federal officers, calling them “cowards” and telling them to leave the city.

Tensions escalated as one officer was seen responding mockingly while walking away, and another protester was forcibly pushed into a car. Demonstrators dragged dumpsters into the streets to block traffic and chanted “ICE out now.”

“They’re killing my neighbours,” said Minneapolis resident Josh Koskie.

Federal officers used batons and deployed flash-bang devices to disperse the crowd.

Governor Walz said he had spoken with the White House and urged Donald Trump to stop what DHS has described as its largest-ever immigration enforcement operation.

In a post on X, Walz said, “Pull the thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota. Now.”

The shooting came just a day after thousands of demonstrators filled Minneapolis streets in freezing temperatures, demanding an end to the immigration crackdown and calling for federal law enforcement agencies to leave the city.
