Make Way Selfie, Photobombs Are Here

Okay, Prince William did it. So it’s official. Selfies are now passé. Though it started with the Queen, Princes William and Harry joined in and suddenly it is the new rage online. There was a time when selfie was a ‘must-post’ on all social media sites.

But all that has changed since the Common Wealth Games, 2014. If you want to keep up with the celebrities, then get set to be photobombed. Yes, you read that one right. We are talking of photobombing or photobombs which have been all over the Internet in the last couple of months.

Jake Gyllenhaal, Bill Clinton, Elle DeGeneres, Russell Brand are among those who have photobombed in recent times. If one goes by the definition, photobombing is the act of purposefully or accidentally putting oneself in a photograph. Often meant to be a practical joke either on the photographer or the subject in focus, it is slowly acquiring cult status with both the celebrities and aam janta. Technically, the term has been around since 2009. But the sting ray photobombs which were all over the Net recently triggered the present trend.

There was a time when just about everyone from cricketers, footballers, actors, students, politicians would post their selfies as a style statement. Now, posting rejected or discarded pictures with objects or people who are not supposed to be in the picture, has become the brand new fad. In the past one week, lot of photobombs went viral with several Hollywood stars, pro-footballers and foreign politicians posting them. In fact, in one picture which garnered many hits, a young cuddly couple posted a picture with an African giraffe in the background.

Well, India is still yet to catch up with the rest of the world as regards this latest trend. We are hoping that pretty soon, we will see our politicians, film stars and cricketers flashing photobombs on social networking sites. We wonder though, if a picture with Ishant Sharma’s tall head popping in the background would qualify as a photobomb? Till then, start posing for your very own photobomb and splash it all over the Net.
