The Income Tax department created a big hungama by raiding the houses and offices of mining tycoon and former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhan Reddy and serving him notices asking him to explain the details of expenditure incurred on his daughter’s wedding the other day.
Well, nobody is finding fault with the Income Tax department for seeking information about the marriage that hit the national headlines because Gali had displayed his stinking wealth through the marriage. If he had really resorted to spending unaccounted money, he should be thrown behind the bars.
But, one wonders why the department is silent on the manner in which Telugu Desam Party MLA from Gurajala Yarapathineni Srinivasa Chowdary had performed the marriage of his son at Guntur a couple of days ago. If not on the scale of Gali Janardhan Reddy, the MLA is learnt to have spent Rs 75 crore on the marriage, including Rs 85 lakh on the wedding saree itself.
One might argue that the wedding expenditure was borne by the bride’s father. Even then, it calls for a probe by the I-T department. May be somebody should file an RTI petition in this case, as was done in case of Gali’s daughter wedding!
