Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is on cloud nine after the resounding victory of the party in Palair in Khammam district.
He has every reason to be jubilant, because his party has successfully decimated the opposition in almost all the elections that were held after the bifurcation of the state.
But, consecutive successes in the elections seem to have gone to his head. The chief minister has now started blackmailing and threatening the opposition parties, if they make any allegations against him or his government.
“Hitherto, I have been maintaining restraint, when they were making allegations against the government with regard to irrigation projects and other government schemes. Now, the people have given us full mandate. I am not going to keep silent, if anybody makes any allegations against us. I am going to file cases against them and drag them to court,” he said, in the post-results press conference on Thursday.
This is nothing but intimidating the opposition. In any democratic system, the Opposition parties are bound to criticise the government and expose the irregularities.
It is the responsibility of the people in power to disprove their allegations. But threatening to file criminal cases against the critics is against the democratic spirits and needs to be condemned.
KCR should remember that power is not permanent and people are watchdogs. They might be supporting him now, but they would not hesitate to pull him down, if the situation arises.
