Polavaram still needs Rs 50,000 cr!

One does not know whether or not the multi-purpose Polavaram project, considered to be the lifeline of coastal Andhra, will be completed by 2019 as promised by Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu, but the project cost has already reached the astronomical heights.

On Friday, Naidu had shocked the members of the Parliamentary standing committee on irrigation saying that the project cost had escalated to Rs 50,000 crore and so far, Rs 12,000 crore had been spent on it.

It would mean, the government would have to spend another Rs 38,000 crore in the next one and a half years.

Is it practically possible to spend such a huge amount in such a short period? Well, only Naidu can answer this.

Explaining about the construction progress of the Polavaram project to the committee members, the chief minister urged them to keep the national interest in mind and a 'fast' construction of the project.

He said he had engaged young engineers to work hard with a commitment to complete the project before the deadline.

He said he had personally inspected the progress of the ongoing works at the project 18 times so far. A target was set to supply water through gravity by 2018 and complete the project by 2019. Later, the committee members left for Polavaram project site to inspect the works.
