The Telugu Desam Party-led alliance has won the recent local body elections in Andhra Pradesh.

However, beyond the celebrations, this victory could become a serious political setback for Kutami in the next general elections.

When the same alliance controls every level of government, from MPs and MLAs to municipal chairpersons, councillors, and village panchayat presidents, accountability becomes a major concern. When corruption takes place, which is obvious, the businessmen and people may develop hatred on entire Alliance.

YSRCP faced similar criticism during its term. Its dominance in local bodies eventually became a political liability. Kutami could face the same fate.

More importantly, postal ballot results deserve attention. Reports suggest that YSRCP secured around 40–45% of postal votes, a significant change from the general elections, when Kutami reportedly received nearly 80%. This shift could indicate growing dissatisfaction among government employees and educated voters.

If these educated voters are already unhappy, the situation in rural areas may be even more serious. Local concerns and public anger never receive coverage in the pro TDP media.

Not only that, we should understand why the TDP and Jana Sena resorted to violence, booth capturing, and fake ballots in these local body elections. They may have wanted to demonstrate their power and strength to the BJP by winning the elections by ‘hook or by crook’.

They know they are in power with the blessing of BJP. If they lose these local body elections, the BJP may feel that the TDP and Jana Sena have lost their political momentum and could consider withdrawing its support in future elections.

Although the BJP knows how these elections were won and ground surveys may reveal the real situation, the TDP and Jana Sena might believe that the BJP will recognise their strength based on their ability to win elections by any means.

Ultimately, electoral victories do not guarantee lasting public support. If voters believe that power is being misused, today’s victory could become tomorrow’s defeat. Alliance must remember that YSRCP learned this lesson the hard way.

  1. BJP may get out of the alliance as they have some self-esteem, but Sena will never choose to do that as they know they will be left on a road with the dead-end if they fight alone in the next general elections.
