In Andhra Pradesh’s local body elections, videos circulating on social media reportedly show YSRCP candidates being prevented from contesting against alliance candidates. This obviously clears the way for coalition candidates to secure unanimous victories.
But why push for unanimous wins?
If an election takes place, the coalition candidate would have to spend heavily to win over voters. Depending on the size of the municipality, the expenditure could reportedly go up to Rs 4–5 crore.
Instead, that money could allegedly be distributed among local leaders, police personnel, officials and party workers. They could then use their influence to prevent YSRCP candidates from filing nominations.
The coalition candidate could then secure an uncontested victory without spending money on voters or facing electoral uncertainty.
If an opponent manages to file a nomination, the candidate would have to spend the same amount on campaigning and persuading voters. Even then, victory would not be guaranteed, and there would also be considerable tension.
According to ground-level reports, this is the real calculation behind pushing for unanimous victories.
In this process, money that would otherwise be spent on voters during the campaign could instead end up benefiting officials, party workers and local politicians who facilitate the outcome.
Afterwards, they could even boast to Chandrababu Naidu about securing unanimous victories by using their influence.
According to the source, this is the real game behind the much-celebrated unanimous victories.
