The Karnataka Cabinet has given in-principle approval for the Bengaluru-Hyderabad Bullet Train project, taking the ambitious high-speed rail corridor one step closer to reality.

The project, described as a dream corridor between two major technology hubs, is now set to move to the next stage, with the Centre and the state governments expected to begin detailed discussions on land acquisition and route finalisation.

The proposed high-speed rail corridor is expected to reduce travel time between Bengaluru and Hyderabad to around two hours. At present, train journeys between the two cities take nearly 8 to 12 hours. Though flights are faster, airport travel, check-in and waiting time often make the overall journey longer.

Once operational, the bullet train could become a major advantage for professionals, business travellers and frequent commuters between the two cities.

The corridor is expected to cover around 626 km, passing through Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Around 101 km of the route will fall in Karnataka. The project is likely to have three important stations in Karnataka.

The proposed Devanahalli station is expected to improve access to Bengaluru airport, while Kodihalli is being planned as a key interchange point. It may also connect with the proposed Bengaluru-Chennai high-speed rail line in the future.

Outside Karnataka, the route is expected to pass through Hindupur, Anantapur, Kurnool and Mahbubnagar before reaching Hyderabad. In total, the corridor may have around 12 stations across the three states.

As per the proposed technical plan, the bullet train corridor will have a design speed of 350 kmph, while the operational speed is expected to be around 320 kmph. Unlike regular railway lines, this corridor is expected to run mostly on elevated tracks.

The Central Government has already approved the preparation of Detailed Project Reports for high-speed rail corridors connecting Hyderabad with Bengaluru and Chennai. RITES Limited has completed the initial survey work for the Hyderabad-Bengaluru route.

The DPR is expected to be finalised between September 2025 and March 2027. The Telangana government has reportedly suggested that the line should start from Shamshabad in Hyderabad.

Land acquisition is now expected to be the key focus area. The Centre has asked Karnataka to appoint a nodal officer to speed up coordination and clearances.

Karnataka Infrastructure Development Minister M. B. Patil has said that the state government will extend full support to the project.

If completed, the Bengaluru-Hyderabad Bullet Train could transform travel between the two major cities and bring down the journey time drastically.
