Has YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) chief and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy decided to give up his soft-stand towards the National Democratic Alliance government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and is inching towards Congress-led INDIA bloc?
His latest posts on X making increasingly sharp criticism of the Election Commission of India (ECI), his outreach to Left parties and his support for opposition-led protests are fuelling speculation about a possible shift of Jagan towards the Congress-led INDIA bloc.
On Wednesday night, Jagan posted a message on X, condemning the arrests of Cockroach Janata Party leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka in Delhi.
“A proactive approach always yields better results than a reactive stance. The system has a flaw that needs to be corrected. Trust in the electoral process must be restored. The arrests of Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka do not solve anything; it only aggravates the situation. I empathise with @SauravDassss and @AshutoshRanka,” the YSRCP chief tweeted.
On Thursday morning, CJP president Abhijit Dipke responded to Jagan’s tweet and thanked him for “speaking out against the illegal arrests of Ashu and Saurav.”
During its previous tenure in Andhra Pradesh, YSRCP consistently supported several key legislative initiatives of the NDA government in Parliament, including the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023.
YSRCP continued to support the BJP-led Centre even after losing power in Andhra Pradesh in the 2024 assembly elections. Its subsequent opposition to the appointment law, coupled with its demand to restore the Chief Justice of India to the selection panel, has therefore attracted political attention.
Jagan has argued that transparency and accountability are essential to strengthening public confidence in constitutional institutions. He called for a review of the appointment framework in the Election Commission.
A couple of days ago, the YSRCP has stepped up its criticism of the ECI by raising nine questions about the conduct of the 2024 elections in Andhra Pradesh. The party has also alleged that its concerns during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Andhra Pradesh were not adequately addressed.
The timing is significant. Rather than confining its criticism to the state government led by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), YSRCP is increasingly directing its political arguments towards the national electoral framework and the institutions responsible for administering elections.
Jagan’s criticism of the electoral system has also extended to protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
He had earlier expressed support for the Cockroach Janata Party’s demonstrations over alleged irregularities in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET).
YSRCP’s recent engagement with Left parties has further fuelled speculation about a possible change in its national political strategy.
Jagan’s meeting with a Communist Party of India (CPI) delegation in September, followed by an announcement of joint protests against government policies, has indicated scope for greater coordination with the Left.
Political circles have also been abuzz with reports that AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal may have met Jagan in Bengaluru a few weeks ago.
If YSRCP moves towards closer coordination with the Congress and Left parties, it would represent a significant departure from its previous strategy of supporting the NDA government on key parliamentary issues while maintaining an independent political identity in Andhra Pradesh.
Such engagement could give Jagan greater scope to raise state-specific issues on a national platform, particularly those concerning electoral institutions and the actions of the TDP-led coalition government. It could also help YSRCP explore political options ahead of the 2029 elections.
The emerging political calculations are also unfolding against the backdrop of mounting legal and political pressure on Jagan.
The Enforcement Directorate’s move to expedite proceedings in his disproportionate-assets cases, along with the decision of a CBI court to conduct daily hearings in the ED cases alongside the ongoing CBI proceedings, has added to the challenges facing the YSRCP president.
The key question is whether YSRCP’s recent interventions represent a tactical support to the opposition parties or the beginning of a more durable political realignment.
The latest developments suggest that YSRCP is broadening its political options and reconsidering how it engages with national parties. They also offer the party an opportunity to distinguish its present position from its earlier parliamentary support for the NDA.
For now, the distinction is important: YSRCP’s rhetoric and political engagements suggest a widening distance from its earlier stance, but there is no confirmed formal realignment.
Whether Jagan converts this emerging convergence into a structured relationship with the INDIA bloc will depend on subsequent political negotiations, the party’s assessment of its interests in Andhra Pradesh and the evolving national electoral landscape.
