Don’t compare electoral success of Vijay with Pawan

Ever since Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) headed by popular Tamil actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay achieved a remarkable success in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, so-called social media analysts have begun drawing comparison between him and Jana Sena Party chief Pawan Kalyan.

Many of them sought to discredit Pawan Kalyan, saying the latter had no guts to fight the elections on his own and was playing a second fiddle to the Telugu Desam Party and Bharatiya Janata Party, whereas Vijay plunged into the electoral battle on his own and achieved victory in his first attempt itself.

However, former Jana Sena leader Bolisetty Satyanarayana, who recently parted ways with the party, said it was unfair to compare the political journey of Pawan Kalyan with that of Vijay.

In a detailed post on X, Satyanarayana described Vijay’s victory as “noteworthy and deserving of appreciation,” but strongly objected to equating it with Pawan Kalyan’s political journey.

He argued that such comparisons overlook the structural, social, and historical differences between Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh politics.

According to Satyanarayana, Tamil Nadu has a long-standing tradition of cinema-driven politics, where film personalities have successfully transitioned into political leadership.

He cited the examples of M G Ramachandran (MGR) and J Jayalalithaa, both of whom leveraged their cinematic popularity to become chief ministers.

In contrast, he said Andhra Pradesh presents a far more complex electoral environment.

“Winning in AP requires not just popularity but a combination of caste alignments, financial resources, organizational strength, and media backing,” he noted.

He pointed out that even TDP founder N T Rama Rao did not rely solely on his film image but benefited from strong socio-economic backing and strategic support systems.

Satyanarayana further analysed why leaders like Chiranjeevi and Pawan Kalyan could not replicate NTR’s success despite enjoying mass popularity.

He attributed this to multiple factors, including adverse media reports, political conspiracies, and non-strategic candidate selection.

Rejecting the argument that Vijay succeeded independently while Pawan Kalyan relied on alliances, Satyanarayana said such claims distort political realities.

He explained that Pawan’s decision to align with other parties in the 2024 elections stemmed from lessons learned during the 2019 polls, where contesting alone led to vote fragmentation and weakened electoral impact.

Satyanarayana emphasized that Pawan Kalyan’s alliances were not driven by a quest for power but by a broader objective of countering dominant forces like the YSR Congress Party and restoring democratic balance in the state.

He argued that Pawan Kalyan’s political journey is rooted in ideological commitment and systemic reform, whereas Vijay’s political entry appears to be a carefully timed and strategy-driven move aimed at electoral success.

Satyanarayana urged observers to avoid simplistic comparisons and instead understand the distinct political dynamics shaping each leader’s journey.
