An entire India-based customer service team working for a US financial company was allegedly laid off during a brief Google Meet call, leaving around 80 employees shocked.
According to a Reddit post shared by one of the affected workers, employees had been asked to work from home that day due to “operational reasons.”
The employee said they were working a 6.30 pm shift when, at around 9.30 pm, the team suddenly received an invitation to join a Google Meet.
During the call, which reportedly lasted only about five minutes, employees were informed that the entire Indian customer service team was being terminated.
“All 80 employees! All gone… 80 families affected just with a five-minute call,” the employee wrote.
The worker expressed frustration over the sudden decision, saying the experience had made them question the value of working hard for large corporations when jobs could disappear with little warning.
When another Reddit user asked what reason had been given for the layoffs, the employee claimed the company said the Indian team was not delivering the expected output.
The worker disputed that explanation, arguing that the US team had higher attrition and more downtime, while the Indian employees had been pushing themselves because of concerns over job security.
Another user asked whether the affected employees would receive severance.
The employee said there was no severance for newer recruits. Those who had completed at least one year with the company would reportedly receive 15 days of pay for every year worked.
The claims have not been independently verified, but the post has drawn attention to concerns around sudden layoffs, job security and the vulnerability of offshore customer service teams working for multinational companies.
