For Indian students and professionals in the United States, maintaining legal status is not optional. Whether you are on an H-1B visa, OPT, F-1 visa, or any other non-immigrant status, your stay in the country comes with clear responsibilities.

Your primary purpose in the U.S. is education, training, or employment. Every decision you make should support that goal.

Recently, there has been growing participation in public rallies and demonstrations connected to political issues and cinema personalities.

While people may have personal opinions, non-immigrant visa holders must understand the risks involved in public activities that could lead to legal complications.

Even a minor incident can have serious immigration consequences. Arrests, police complaints, disorderly conduct charges, or involvement in unlawful gatherings may affect visa renewals, future immigration applications, travel permissions, or employment opportunities.

In some cases, a single legal record can place years of hard work and sacrifice at risk.

This is not about limiting freedom of expression. It is about understanding the responsibilities that come with living in another country under a temporary visa status.

Immigration authorities carefully review compliance with laws and regulations, and any violation can become part of your permanent record.

Students and professionals should remain cautious, disciplined, and focused on their long-term goals. Avoid situations that may create unnecessary legal attention or misunderstandings. Follow all U.S. laws strictly and maintain a clean record at all times.

Your education, career, and future opportunities are far more valuable than temporary distractions. Families invest enormous trust, money, and hope into your journey abroad. Protect that investment with maturity and responsibility.

Success in the United States is built through discipline, academic excellence, professional growth, and lawful conduct. One careless mistake can impact years of effort. Build your future wisely and stay committed to the purpose that brought you there.

  1. I agree that NRIs, regardless of their visa status, should not break rules or attempt to cheat the system under any circumstances. That said, online hate on platforms like X and other social media should not be confused with real life. Much of it is driven by bad actors serving the interests of a few parties or countries, along with people who blindly believe and amplify false narratives.

Also to those consultancies who participate in malpractices- you are the biggest reason Indians in USA are portrayed badly across world.

    1. I don’t trust Indian consulting companies. Sad reality. One fine morning, they will change the company name and all your money is gone. Been there 😔

  2. “Your primary purpose in the U.S. is education, training, or employment”

    should be reworded as

“Your ONLY purpose in the U.S. is education, training, or employment (through LEGAL means). Anything else, get ready to be sent back”.

    TFYOTM.
