US technology stocks suffered a sharp fall on Thursday as investors grew worried about the future of artificial intelligence (AI) data centre projects following the midterm elections.
The sell-off wiped out the gains made during Wednesday’s post-election rally, with major chipmakers taking a particularly heavy hit.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite plunged more than 5% during late morning trading in New York before recovering some of its losses.
AI chip giant Nvidia fell more than 6%, while its rival AMD crashed 12%. Memory chip manufacturer Micron also suffered a sharp decline of 11%.
These companies have benefited significantly from the rapid expansion of AI data centres, which require powerful processors and large amounts of memory.
However, investors are now concerned that the newly elected members of Congress could introduce restrictions on the construction of new data centres.
AI data centre projects have faced opposition from communities across the United States, with concerns cutting across political lines.
Several candidates who won the midterm elections have promised to impose tighter regulations or temporarily halt new data centre construction.
This has raised fears that the massive investments planned by technology companies could face delays or restrictions.
Market sentiment was also affected by a recovery in oil prices, adding further pressure on equities.
Chris Beauchamp, chief market analyst at trading platform IG, said investors were worried about how the new Congress might treat the technology sector, which has enjoyed strong support from President Donald Trump.
He pointed out that AI-related stocks had been among the biggest drivers of the market rally this year, making them particularly vulnerable to political uncertainty.
Beauchamp warned that if the situation worsened, the current sell-off could turn into broader market panic.
The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, which tracks major semiconductor companies, plunged more than 8%, reflecting the heavy selling pressure on AI-related stocks.
With AI investments playing a major role in Wall Street’s recent gains, concerns over possible restrictions on data centre projects have triggered fresh uncertainty among investors.
