Actress Sharanya Bhagyaraj, daughter of the star couple Bhagyaraj and Poornima Bhagyaraj allegedly attempted suicide in the early hours of Tuesday by trying to jump from the terrace of her house. According to sources, Sharanya was standing on the parapet wall of the terrace when a servant maid spotted her. The maid immediately alerted her family members, who soon came to the spot and rescued the actress. She was later admitted to Malar Hospital in Adyar, where is undergoing psychiatric treatment under Dr Rangarajan.
The reason for this extreme step was attributed to a failed relationship. Sources reveal that of late, the 23-year-old had been mentally disturbed after her relationship with an NRI based in Australia broke up. It is learnt that Sharanya, who started her film career with the film Paarijatham opposite Prithiviraj which was directed by her father Bhagyaraj, was involved with the NRI for the past year. Even though she got a couple of film offers after her debut, she only signed one Malayalam film and a Tamil film titled Dhik Dhik which is yet to be released.
Sources add that Sharanya had been shuttling between Chennai and Australia quite often and the disheartened actress resorted to this extreme step following a recent split between the two when the man allegedly refused to marry her. Sources also add that this is not the first time Sharanya has attempted suicide. This was reportedly her third attempt. During the previous attempts too she was saved due to the timely intervention of her family. When this newspaper tried to contact her family members, they weren't available for comment. However, while the doctors at Malar Hospital confirmed that it was a case of attempted suicide, friends close to the family denied this and claim that the actress was down with food poisoning and was admitted to the hospital for treatment.
