Vijayawada police to set up economic and cyber crime cell

Vijayawada: The city police is planning to set up a separate cell to deal with economic and cyber crimes in view of increase in such cases.

"We are mulling to set up a dedicated cell to deal with economic and cyber crimes from the city," Goutam Sawang, Police Commissioner of Vijayawada, said today.

Talking to reporters, he said "the role of police has increased with the Vijayawada-Guntur region becoming the new capital of the State. At the same time, white collar crime rate has increased manifold."

Before a separate Police Commissionarate for capital Amaravati is established, police force has to be strengthened and trained to meet all kinds of challenges, particularly white collar and cyber crimes.

Already, a group of officers is being trained by a private agency to detect and solve economic offences, Sawang said.

He said police are also taking the support of Chartered Accountants and legal experts to deal with call money crimes, which are of complex nature. The intelligence and traffic wings of the police are also being strengthened.

On call money racket, the Police Commissioner said "so far 600 complaints have received and each of them has to be assessed in detail."

On the suspected role of politicians in the racket, the city police chief said "we can't prove this unless we have substantial evidence."

These call money cases are complicated and police have to prove the allegations against the accused (private money lenders) in the court, Sawang said. (PTI)
