Surprise: Allagadda seat not in assembly by-poll list

Hyderabad: The Allagadda assembly constituency in Andhra Pradesh, from where a deceased candidate of the YSR Congress party was declared elected in the elections held in May, did not figure in the list of seats for which by-elections were announced by the Election Commission Saturday.

The Election Commission announced that by-elections to three Lok Sabha and 33 assembly seats across nine states will be held Sep 13. The results will be announced Sep 16.

The list of assembly seats includes Nandigama, another constituency in Andhra Pradesh which fell vacant due to the death of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) legislator T. Prabhakar.

The Medak Lok Sabha constituency in Telangana will also go to polls Sep 13.

The by-election became necessary as Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao resigned from there and chose to retain the Gajwel assembly seat from where he was elected simultaneously.

The poll panel surprisingly left out Allagadda in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh.

In the elections held May 5, YSR Congress leader Bhuma Shobha Nagi Reddy, who died in a road accident during the campaigning, was elected.

She won the seat by defeating her nearest rival G. Prabhakar Reddy of the TDP by nearly 18,000 votes.

A key leader of the YSR Congress, 46-year-old Shobha died in a car crash in her constituency April 24. However, the Election Commission did not countermand the election as the YSR Congress is not a recognised party.

Since her name was already included on the ballot paper, the poll panel clarified that she remained a contesting candidate and if she gets elected, a by-election will be held.

The name of YSR Congress honorary president Y.S. Vijayamma was doing the rounds as the possible party candidate for by-election in Allagadda.

Vijayamma, mother of party chief Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, lost the Lok Sabha election in Visakhapatnam constituency.
